Trouble shooting mobile push notifications not working

If push notifications are not working on your mobile device, we recommend reviewing the following.

There could be a variety of reasons causing the issue, from device settings to Discord-specific problems. Here’s a comprehensive troubleshooting guide to help you identify and fix the issue:

1. Check Discord Notification Settings

  • Server-specific Settings: Make sure you haven’t muted the server or channel you’re expecting notifications from. Right-click the server icon, go to Notification Settings, and ensure it’s not muted or set to Only Mentions.

  • General Notification Settings: Open Discord settings by clicking the gear icon next to your username. Under Notifications, ensure that Enable Desktop Notifications and Enable Push Notifications (if you're on mobile) are turned on.

2. Verify Device-Specific Notification Settings

For Desktop:

  • Windows Settings:

    1. Open Settings > System > Notifications & actions.

    2. Make sure that Discord is listed under Get notifications from these senders and is turned on.

    3. Check if Focus Assist is disabled, as it may suppress notifications.

  • Mac Settings:

    1. Open System Preferences > Notifications.

    2. Find Discord in the app list and ensure that Allow Notifications is checked.

For Mobile:

  • iOS:

    1. Go to Settings > Notifications > Discord.

    2. Ensure that Allow Notifications is toggled on, and check that Alerts are set to show on Lock Screen, Notification Center, and Banners.

    3. Make sure that Do Not Disturb is not enabled for your phone.

  • Android:

    1. Go to Settings > Apps & notifications > Discord > Notifications.

    2. Ensure Allow Notifications is enabled.

    3. Check if the notifications are set to Show silently or have the appropriate priority.

3. Check the Do Not Disturb Mode

  • Ensure that Do Not Disturb (DND) mode is not active in Discord. If DND is on, it silences all notifications.

  • On Desktop: Check the moon icon at the bottom left of Discord and make sure it's not activated.

  • On Mobile: Check for the DND icon in the status bar.

4. Clear Cache and Re-login

Sometimes clearing the app’s cache or restarting the app can resolve notification issues.

  • Desktop: Close Discord, navigate to AppData (for Windows), and delete the cache and local storage files. Then, restart Discord.

  • Mobile: Go to Settings > Apps > Discord > Storage > Clear Cache (for Android). On iOS, you can try deleting and reinstalling the app.

5. Recheck Your Internet Connection

If you're experiencing intermittent or no notifications, the issue could be with your network connection.

  • Try restarting your router.

  • If you're on mobile, ensure you have a stable connection, whether it's Wi-Fi or cellular data.

6. Update Discord

Outdated versions of Discord might have bugs that affect notifications.

  • Check for updates on your desktop app or mobile app store (Google Play for Android or the App Store for iOS).

7. Test Notification with Another User or Server

Sometimes, the problem may be related to a specific server or user. Test notifications by mentioning yourself in another server or having another user mention you.

8. Reinstall Discord

If none of the above methods worked, try uninstalling and reinstalling Discord. This will help resolve any corrupted files or settings.

9. Check Discord Server and Global Status

  • Occasionally, Discord may experience server-side issues affecting notifications. Visit Discord’s Status Page to see if there are any ongoing problems that may affect push notifications.

10. Review Third-Party Apps/Extensions

  • Browser Notifications: If you use Discord in a web browser, make sure your browser allows notifications. Ensure that no extensions (such as ad blockers or privacy tools) are blocking Discord notifications.

  • Firewall/Security Software: If you have security software or a firewall on your device, it might block notifications. Check to see if Discord is being blocked and whitelist the app if necessary.

11. Check Your Notification Preferences on Discord

In your user settings (cogwheel), under Notifications, ensure that your notification preferences are set correctly, including sound settings, push notifications for mobile, and desktop alerts.

By systematically going through each of these steps, you should be able to identify and resolve the issue with Discord push notifications not working.
